Prawn Dum Briyani

When we say or hear the word Briyani immediately we will feel mouth watering because of its yummy taste. Briyani is a favourite food for many of us. Prawn Dum Briyani will taste more delicious because of the method we use to make this Briyani.
Escpecially kids will love Prawn Briyani. It is very easy to make homemade Prawn Dum Briyani without any compromise in taste or flavor or aroma. I have made it very simple for you to prepare all the necessary things one by one. It will be easy for you to follow the instructions and make this dish within an hour.

For Main Dish

  • Prawn – 2 kg
  • Oil – 250 ml
  • Ghee – 4 tbsp
  • Onion – 12 big onions
  • Tomato – 8 big tomatoes
  • Garam masala powder – 5 tbsp
  • Coriander powder – 3 tbsp
  • Cumin powder – 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tbsp
  • Salt – To taste ( 3 to 4 tbsp )
  • Mint leaves – 1 cup
  • Coriander leaves – 1 cup
  • Basmathi rice – 7 cups
  • Coconut milk – 5 cups
  • Water – 6 cups

For Green Paste

    • Mint leaves – 1 cup
    • Red Chilli – 10
    • Green Chilli – 7 big size
    • Ginger – 1 big palm size
    • Garlic – 20
    • Water – 1/4 cup

Blend as a smooth paste in the blender.

For Marination

    • Prawn – 2 kg
    • Red Chilli powder – 2 tbsp
    • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tbsp
    • Garam Masala powder – 1 tbsp ( optional )
    • Salt – 1/4 tbsp

Wash prawns by adding ¼ tbsp of turmeric powder in water to take out the smell. Take a bowl and add washed prawns, chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt and marinate the prawns for 30 mins.

For Flavour

  • Fennel seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Bay leaf – 4
  • Cinnamon bark – 2 big ones
  • Cloves – 5
  • Cardamom – 4
  • Kapok buds( Marathi Moggu ) – 6

For Salad

    • Onion – 3 sliced
    • Tomato – 2 chopped
    • Green chilli – 2 chopped
    • Yoghurt – 1 cup

Take a bowl and mix all the above things to make as a salad.


1Soak Basmathi rice in water for 30 mins and marinate the prawn for 30 minutes.


2Heat the vessel and pour oil and then add ghee.Now add Fennel seeds, Bay leaf, Cinnamon bark, Cloves, Cardamom and Kapok buds. Saute until it leaves nice aroma.


3Now add onions and fry until golden brown. Then add the green paste, mix well and sauté for 3 mins.


4Add garam masala powder, coriander powder, cumin powder and turmeric powder. Saute for another 2 mins.


5Now add the marinated prawns, mix well and add salt to it. Close the lid and keep in medium flame for 3 mins. Add coconut milk, water and mix well and allow it to boil.


6Add the fresh mint leaves, coriander leaves and tomatoes and close the lid and allow it to boil for 5 mins. Check for taste. If required add salt and sliced green chillies.


7Drain the water from basmathi rice and add to the above mixture. Close the vessel with lid and keep another big vessel filled with water on top of it to prevent the vapour from going out.


8Keep in low flame and don’t open the vessel for another 20 mins. Now the briyani will be completely cooked. Turn off the flame and leave for another 10 mins.


9Serve hot and spicy prawn dum briyani with boiled egg and salad.
